CentOS Stream FAQ

What to know before you order, and right after.

What is CentOS Stream?

CentOS Stream is a Linux distribution published by the CentOS Project. It is continuously delivered and tracks just ahead of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) development, sitting between Fedora and RHEL.

How is it different from the old CentOS Linux?

CentOS Linux was a rebuild of RHEL published after each RHEL release. CentOS Stream works the other way round: it receives changes before they land in RHEL. It is a good base to get ahead of RHEL, less so for a server that must stay frozen for years. For that need, AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux are also available.

How long is CentOS Stream 9 maintained?

The CentOS Project maintains CentOS Stream 9 until May 31, 2027, the end of the RHEL 9 full support phase. After that date, plan a migration to another system.

Is CentOS Stream 8 still maintained?

No. CentOS Stream 8 reached end of life on May 31, 2024: it no longer receives any updates, and its packages are archived on vault.centos.org. The image remains available for compatibility needs, but do not use it for a new server.

Is CentOS Stream free?

Yes. CentOS Stream is a free distribution with no licence to buy. You only pay for the VPS, at the price shown on this page.

What minimum configuration do I need?

Every plan on this page is suitable for CentOS Stream. Choose the size based on what you will run on it: memory and disk mostly depend on your applications.

How do I access the server after ordering?

Log in over SSH as root on the VPS IP address, shown in the console. If you added an SSH key when ordering, it is already installed. The KVM console also gives you the server's screen from the browser.

Who updates the system?

You do. Updates are done with dnf, at the pace you choose. Take a snapshot from the console before a major update so you can roll back.

Is my data backed up?

With the backup option (from €0.99 excl. VAT/month), your VPS is backed up automatically once a day and can be restored from the console. On-demand snapshots give you a rollback point before a change.

Can I install cPanel on CentOS Stream?

We install cPanel & WHM when you order on AlmaLinux 10, not on CentOS Stream. Our support covers the VPS: the server, its network, storage and availability; the system and what you install on it remain your responsibility, with root access.
