HestiaCP FAQ
What to know before you order, and right after.
What is HestiaCP?
Hestia Control Panel (HestiaCP) is an open source web hosting panel. From a web interface, you manage users and their websites, mailboxes, databases, DNS zones, cron jobs and backups.
Do I need to buy a licence?
No. HestiaCP is released under the GNU GPLv3 licence: it is free, with no licence or subscription. You only pay for your VPS.
How do I log in the first time?
Once the installation is done, connect to the server over SSH with your project key and run sudo cat /root/hestiacp-admin.txt: the file holds the administrator username and password generated during the installation. Open https://<server IP>:8083; your browser warns about a self-signed certificate until a domain name is configured, this is expected. Change the password at your first login, then delete the file.
How long does the installation take?
The HestiaCP installation starts right after the server is created, on Debian 13, and usually takes 10 to 20 minutes. The console shows the progress; the panel is then reachable on port 8083.
What is the minimum configuration?
The HestiaCP documentation lists at least 1 core, 1 GB of RAM (without SpamAssassin and ClamAV) and 10 GB of disk, and recommends 4 cores, 4 GB of RAM and 40 GB of SSD. We install HestiaCP on plans with at least 1 vCPU, 2 GB of RAM and 20 GB of storage: only those are offered on this page. Go bigger if you host many sites or a lot of email.
What exactly is installed?
We run the official HestiaCP installer with its default components: Nginx and Apache with PHP-FPM, MariaDB, Exim and Dovecot with Roundcube webmail, BIND for DNS, vsftpd, the firewall and Fail2Ban. The ClamAV antivirus and the SpamAssassin filter are not installed, to keep the server light.
Can I migrate my sites from another panel?
HestiaCP restores its own backups and VestaCP backups. For cPanel and DirectAdmin, it ships the v-import-cpanel and v-import-directadmin commands, which import an account backup into a new user. You can also move your files and databases by hand.
Are my sites backed up?
Daily backups available as an option from €0.99 excl. VAT/month, depending on the plan: they back up the whole VPS, HestiaCP and your sites included. HestiaCP also runs its own per-user backups, stored on the server or sent over FTP, SFTP or through Rclone. A first snapshot is free: take one before a major update.
Who maintains HestiaCP and the server?
HestiaCP is developed by the Hestia Control Panel open source project and can update itself through a scheduled task you turn on or off. The VPS is yours: you keep root SSH access and you run the system and the panel. Our 24/7 support helps with the server, the installation and the network.
HestiaCP, cPanel or Plesk?
All three manage sites, email, databases and DNS. HestiaCP is free and lightweight, on Debian 13, and runs on the smallest plans. cPanel & WHM (on AlmaLinux 10) and Plesk (on Ubuntu 26.04) add tools such as WP Toolkit, but need a licence bought from their publisher and more resources.
