CPU, GPU and storage: what to know
As deployed by One Click Apps, Immich does all of its computing on the processor, and your photos take up the server's disk.
Machine learning on the processor
Facial recognition, smart search and duplicate detection run on the CPU: the first analysis of a large library takes time, then new photos are processed as they arrive. The models run on your server, with no external AI service.
Videos converted by the processor
Immich converts videos so they play in the browser and the apps, in software on the CPU. The more vCPUs you have, the faster a large video collection is imported.
Your photos on the VPS disk
Photos and videos are stored in an application volume, on the VPS NVMe storage. According to Immich, thumbnails and converted videos add 10 to 20% to the library size on average, and the database weighs 1 to 3 GB.
Backups take space too
One Click Apps daily backups copy the volumes, photos included, to the same disk, with 7 days of retention: keep some free space, and a copy off the server.
GPU option on the High performance range
High performance VPS accept a 24 GB NVIDIA L4 GPU, billed €0.70 excl. VAT/hour by the minute, with no commitment and a reboot when it is attached. Immich can use it: CUDA for machine learning, NVENC for video conversion. The One Click Apps deployment stays configured for the processor: to benefit, install the NVIDIA driver and the NVIDIA Container Toolkit on the VPS, then adapt Immich's configuration following its documentation. This is an advanced setup, under your responsibility.

What is Immich?
Immich is a self-hosted photo and video management application. It replaces a service such as Google Photos or iCloud Photos: automatic backup from your phone, timeline, shared albums, map, facial recognition and search by image content.
Is Immich free? Under which licence?
Yes. Immich is free software released under the AGPL-3.0 licence. Its team offers an optional purchase to support the project, and states that every feature stays free. The prices on this page are those of the VPS.
What is the minimum configuration?
Immich requires at least 6 GB of RAM and 2 cores, and recommends 8 GB and 4 cores. Since 1 GB stays reserved for the system and the One Click Apps platform, only plans with at least 8 GB of RAM are offered here. Choose 4 vCPUs or more if you import a large library, and the disk space according to the volume of your photos and videos.
Do I need a GPU for Immich?
No. As deployed by One Click Apps, Immich uses the processor for facial recognition, smart search, duplicate detection and video conversion. Everything works, but the first analysis of a large library can take hours, during which the server is busy; after that, only new photos are processed. On the High performance range, the NVIDIA L4 GPU option (€0.70 excl. VAT/hour, no commitment) can speed up this work, provided you install the NVIDIA driver and the NVIDIA Container Toolkit, then adapt Immich's configuration yourself. OnetSolutions does not provide any AI model: Immich's models are downloaded by the application and run on your server.
How do I back up the photos on my phone?
Install the Immich app for Android or iOS, enter your server's HTTPS address and sign in. Pick the albums to back up: new photos are uploaded when the app opens and in the background, over Wi-Fi by default. On iPhone, Background App Refresh must be enabled.
Where are my photos stored, and how much space should I plan?
In an application volume, on the VPS NVMe disk. Plan for the size of your library, plus 10 to 20% for thumbnails and converted videos according to Immich, 1 to 3 GB for the database, and space for the daily backups, stored on the same disk. If you run out of room, move to a larger plan from the console.
Are my photos backed up?
Immich's volumes, photos and database included, are backed up every day at 3 am and kept for 7 days, on the VPS disk. These backups protect you from a mistake in the application, not from losing the server: add the VPS backup option (from €2.99 excl. VAT/month) or take a snapshot. Immich itself recommends the 3-2-1 rule: three copies, on two kinds of media, one of them off site.
How is Immich updated?
Every night the console checks whether a new Immich version has been published and shows a banner: you start the update when you decide to, and your photos are kept. Read Immich's release notes and take a snapshot before a major version.
Can I use my own domain name?
Yes. Add it in the application's Domains tab. If the DNS zone is managed at OnetSolutions, the A record is created for you; otherwise the console shows the IP address to point it to. The HTTPS certificate is issued automatically.
Who looks after Immich once it is installed?
Immich is developed by its team and its community. Our support covers the VPS: the server, its network, its storage and its availability. Immich, its accounts, your photos and their updates remain your responsibility: the console gives you the tools to manage them, and you keep root access to the server.
