Online in three steps

Nothing to install: you order, Vaultwarden is deployed on your server and published over HTTPS.

  1. 01

    Pick your VPS

Select a plan with at least 2 vCPUs, 2 GB of RAM and 30 GB of disk: Vaultwarden is already ticked in the order.

  2. 02

    Vaultwarden deploys itself

The One Click Apps platform installs on your VPS, then deploys Vaultwarden and its web vault, without typing a single command.

  3. 03

    Create your vault

Open Vaultwarden on its HTTPS address, create your account, then point your Bitwarden apps to your server.

A Bitwarden-compatible server, on your VPS

Vaultwarden reimplements the Bitwarden client API: you keep the Bitwarden apps you know, and the vault is stored on your server.

  • Personal vault

Logins, payment cards, identities and secure notes, organised in folders and synced across your devices.

  • Bitwarden apps

Bitwarden's browser extensions, mobile and desktop apps connect to your server once you enter its address.

  • Organizations and collections

Share passwords as a team, with member roles, groups, policies and event logs.

  • Two-step login

Authenticator app, email, FIDO2 WebAuthn keys, YubiKey or Duo to protect every account.

  • Send and attachments

Attach files to your items and pass on a text or a file through a Send link.

  • Emergency access

Name a trusted person who can request access to your vault when needed.

  • Admin page

An /admin page, protected by a token generated at deployment, to manage users, invitations and the server configuration.

  • Lightweight, written in Rust

Built for self-hosting where the official Bitwarden server would be too heavy. The vault lives in an SQLite database, on the application's volume.

Managed from the console with One Click Apps

  • Automatic HTTPS

An HTTPS address from deployment, or your own domain with its Let's Encrypt certificate. The web vault only works over HTTPS.

  • Logs and variables

Read Vaultwarden's logs and edit its environment variables without opening a terminal.

  • Updates

The console detects new Vaultwarden versions, and you start the update when you decide to.

  • Daily backups

Vaultwarden's volume, database and attachments included, backed up every day and kept for 7 days, restorable in one click.

Three settings to know after deployment

  • Close sign-ups

Sign-ups are open at deployment. Once your accounts are created, set SIGNUPS_ALLOWED to false in the Variables tab.

  • Set up email

Invitations and email two-step login need an SMTP server, entered in Vaultwarden's SMTP variables.

  • Mobile push notifications

They are off by default. Turning them on requires an installation ID and key obtained from Bitwarden.

Vaultwarden is an independent community project, published under the AGPL-3.0 licence. It is neither affiliated with nor endorsed by Bitwarden, Inc.; "Bitwarden" is a trademark of Bitwarden, Inc. Questions about Vaultwarden go to its maintainers, not to Bitwarden support.

What you can do with Vaultwarden

    • Safari
  • On your phone

The Bitwarden mobile apps reach the same vault and fill in your logins in other apps.

    • Android
    • iOS
  • On your workstations

The Bitwarden desktop apps, on macOS, Linux or Windows, connect to your server too.

    • macOS
    • Linux

Vaultwarden FAQ

What to know before you order, and right after.

What is Vaultwarden?

Vaultwarden is an alternative implementation of the Bitwarden server, written in Rust. It speaks the Bitwarden client API: you use the usual Bitwarden apps, but your vault is stored on your own server.

Is Vaultwarden an official Bitwarden product?

No. Vaultwarden is an independent community project, not associated with Bitwarden, Inc.; "Bitwarden" is a trademark of Bitwarden, Inc. For a question or a bug, contact the Vaultwarden maintainers, not Bitwarden support.

Is Vaultwarden free?

Yes. Vaultwarden is free software published under the AGPL-3.0 licence, with no subscription and no per-user fee. The prices shown on this page are those of the VPS.

How do I access Vaultwarden after ordering?

Once the VPS is created, the One Click Apps platform installs and then deploys Vaultwarden. Its HTTPS address is shown in the console, in the application's Overview tab, along with the admin page token. Open the address, create your account, then enter it as the self-hosted server in your Bitwarden apps.

Why is HTTPS required?

Vaultwarden's web vault encrypts and decrypts your data in the browser, which requires an HTTPS connection. One Click Apps publishes the application over HTTPS from deployment, on a generated address or on your domain, with a Let's Encrypt certificate.

Can I use my own domain name?

Yes. Add it in the application's Domains tab. If the DNS zone is managed at OnetSolutions, the A record is created for you; otherwise, the console shows the IP address to point it to. The HTTPS certificate is issued automatically.

What minimum configuration do I need?

One Click Apps needs at least 2 vCPUs, 2 GB of RAM and 30 GB of disk, with 1 GB of memory reserved for the system and the platform. Vaultwarden is lightweight: that minimum leaves room for other applications on the same server.

Is my vault backed up?

Vaultwarden's volume, which holds its database and attachments, is backed up every day at 03:00 and kept for 7 days, on the VPS disk: these backups protect you from a mistake in the application, not from losing the server. For that, add the VPS backup option (from €1.99 excl. VAT/month) or take a snapshot, and export your vault regularly from a Bitwarden client.

How do updates work?

Every night, the console compares the installed Vaultwarden version with the one published upstream. When an update is available, a banner says so and you start it in one click; the data on the volume is kept.

Who looks after Vaultwarden once it is installed?

Vaultwarden is maintained by its authors, the project's community. Our support covers the VPS: the server, its network, its storage and its availability. Vaultwarden, its accounts, its configuration and its updates remain your responsibility: the console gives you the tools to manage them, and you keep root access to the server.
