What is AlmaLinux?
AlmaLinux is an open source, community-governed enterprise Linux distribution, binary compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux. It was created to fill the gap left when CentOS Linux stable releases were discontinued, and it is backed by the AlmaLinux OS Foundation, a non-profit organisation.
Is AlmaLinux free?
Yes. AlmaLinux is free and open source, with no subscription or licence key: the distribution brings together free software released under its own licences (GPL, MIT, BSD…). The prices on this page are those of the VPS.
AlmaLinux 10 or AlmaLinux 9: which one should I pick?
AlmaLinux 10 is preselected: it is the latest version, with active support until 31 May 2030 and security fixes until 31 May 2035. AlmaLinux 9 remains available for software not yet validated on version 10: active support until 31 May 2027, security fixes until 31 May 2032. You can reinstall the server on the other version from the console, which erases its data.
What is the minimum configuration?
AlmaLinux installs from 1 vCPU, 1 GB of RAM and 10 GB of disk: every plan on this page exceeds that minimum. Size the server for what you will run on it instead; cPanel & WHM, for instance, needs 2 vCPU, 4 GB of RAM and 40 GB of disk.
How do I log in to the server?
Once the server is created, log in over SSH with its IP address and the access details shown in the console, or with an SSH key added at creation. The KVM console, in your browser, also gives you access to the server without SSH. The system is installed as a minimal, command-line-only setup.
Who maintains the system and its updates?
The AlmaLinux project publishes the distribution updates; you apply them with dnf, whenever you choose. Our support covers the VPS: the server, its network, its storage and its availability. The system, its configuration and the software you install remain your responsibility, with full root access.
Is my data backed up?
Add the daily VPS backup option (from €0.99 excl. VAT/month), and take a snapshot before a sensitive operation such as a system update: your first snapshot is free. Without that option, the server data is not backed up for you.
Can I install cPanel on AlmaLinux?
Yes. Pick cPanel & WHM when you order: it installs automatically on AlmaLinux 10, on a plan with at least 2 vCPU, 4 GB of RAM and 40 GB of disk. The installation starts with a trial licence when the server IP address is eligible for one; a cPanel licence, bought from cPanel, is required afterwards.
Does One Click Apps work on AlmaLinux?
No. One Click Apps needs a VPS running Debian or Ubuntu: to deploy an application in one click, pick it when you order and the right system is installed for you. On AlmaLinux, you install your software yourself, with dnf or in containers.
Can I migrate a CentOS server to AlmaLinux?
Yes, the AlmaLinux project provides tools for that: almalinux-deploy converts a CentOS 8 server in place, and ELevate upgrades a CentOS 7 server or moves from one major version to the next. On a new VPS, the simplest path is often to install AlmaLinux 10 and transfer your data.
